Do I Have The Skills It Takes to Run A Franchise?

When looking for a job, the first thing people want to know is if they are qualified for a job or not. Generally, when you apply to a position there is a list of requirements along with the job description. If you’re considering a job as a franchise owner, things are a bit different. There is no website with a list of requirements, which if you ask us, is a good thing!

Every franchise is different, so the skills necessary might vary, but here are some of the most common skills that you should have if you want to own your own franchise:

People Skills

You don’t have to be the world’s biggest social butterfly to own a franchise, but if you are looking for a job with minimal person-to-person interaction, franchise ownership might not be for you.

As a franchise owner, you communicate regularly with several people including individuals from the franchise headquarters, your staff and customers. To be a successful franchise owner you must know how to communicate and know what it takes to provide excellent customer service.

Results Driven

I have found that many of my clients are interested in owning a franchise because they can directly see their results. As an employee of a large corporation, very rarely do you get to see your direct impact to the organization. As a franchise owner however, you get to see ALL of the reports and see just how your hard work pays off. If this motivates you, you will be an excellent franchise owner.

Familiarity With Numbers

Most franchisees work directly with accountants, but still, you must be able to work with numbers. You will want to check out all of the numbers that show you what it is costing to run your franchise, what supplies are costing, the cost of payroll, and more. All of the tough stuff can be outsourced, but you must be able to analyze numbers.

A Go-Getter

Perhaps the greatest benefit of owning a franchise is the flexibility. Once your business is up and running, you can come into work when you want and work as little as you want. We will admit that it takes a little time to get to that point and it is not sunshine and rainbows getting to that point. You must be ready to work hard and challenge yourself during the first few months of ownership.

Willing to Follow Guidelines

As a franchise owner, you own your own business, under someone else’s guidelines. That is why it is so important to do your research and find a franchise that you will work well with. If you don’t agree with the way they run their business, you might want to consider an alternative franchise. Don’t get discouraged though; there are thousands of franchises out there and there is a perfect match for everyone!
